Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most. Do not see yours? Just call or text.

How do I get a free estimate?

The fastest way is to text us. Send a few photos of the area, rough measurements and what you have in mind to 865-446-0692, and we can often give you an estimate right over text. If we need to see it in person, we will stop by on our way to or from a job. We do not leave a job site in the middle of the day for estimates, which keeps our current customers on schedule and our prices fair.

How much does a deck or porch cost?

Every job is different. The price depends on the size, height, materials, railing, stairs and roof or screen options. Text us photos and measurements for a free estimate.

Do I need a permit?

Permit rules depend on your county and city. The homeowner gets the permit, so check with your local building department before we start. We build every deck and porch to code.

Should I go with Trex, wood or hardwood?

Trex and composite decking costs more up front but will not rot, splinter or need staining. Pressure treated wood costs less up front but needs regular sealing. Hardwoods like Tigerwood and Garapa are beautiful and very durable. We work with all of them and will help you choose.

Why steel joist framing?

A wood frame can rot and warp long before composite deck boards wear out. We build with G90 galvanized steel framing, which will not rot or warp, so the frame lasts as long as the decking. See our steel frame decks.

What makes your decks last longer?

We pre-drill boards so they do not crack, set every screw flush so water cannot get in, route our cuts, use double 2x4s on handrails, avoid triple beams and set handrail posts inside the deck with blocking so they do not wobble. Our Quality page explains each one.

Can you add a roof or screen to my deck?

Yes. We build porch roofs with metal or shingles, tongue and groove ceilings, and screened-in porches using the MiniTrack system from Screen Tight. See our screened porches.

Do you repair or replace old decks?

Yes. We tear out rotted and unsafe decks and rebuild them, and we can repair steps, railings and boards.

Who will do the work?

We will. The Deck Builder is two brothers, Tom and Steven, with one crew. We do every job ourselves and do not use subcontractors.

How long will my project take?

It depends on the size and materials. We will give you a time estimate along with your price.

What areas do you serve?

Most of our work is in Maryville and Blount County and Knoxville and Oak Ridge. We are now based in Deer Lodge and also serve Morgan County, Harriman, Crossville and nearby towns. See the full list on our Contact page.
